At
Adams Cyclery, Safety is an Important Issue. We
put our belief in bike safety ahead of business. We conduct bicycle
safety workshops to school classes and scout troops and stress
safety to our customers. We are active members in SAFE KIDS, an
organization which promotes bike helmet safety.
WEARING A BICYCLE HELMET IS SMART!
IT'S ALSO THE LAW
FOR CHILDREN UNDER 14 YEARS OF AGE.
On a bicycle, even a minor spill can mean serious
head and brain injury. Bicyclists can greatly reduce the risk
of head injury by wearing a helmet. In fact, A HELMET MAY BE THE
MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF BICYCLE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. Buy your child
an approved bike helmet. Purchase one that has a sticker inside
certifying the helmet meets safety standards. Let your child pick
out the helmet because it must be worm every time he or she rides.
If you're a rider, buy one for youself, too and set a good example
by wearing it. Also encourage your child's friends to wear helmets.
| Here
are some other important bicycle safety tips: |
|
• |
Make sure your bike is
the correct size, safely maintained and has reflectors. |
| • |
Always stop and look
left-right-left before entering the road. Use hand signals
to indicate turning or stopping. |
| • |
If
a bicyclist rides in the road, the cyclist must obey traffic
laws that apply to motor vehicle operators. This includes
signs, signals and markings. Keep right, drive with the
traffic, not against it and drive in single file. |
| • |
Ride
single file unless not obstructing traffic (never more
than double file). |
| • |
Never
leave anyone alone on the route. Include new members even
if you have to slow your pace to help. |
|
• |
Never allow a child to ride
at night and no one should ride with audio headphones. It
is a New York State law that you must have a light on your
bicycle if you ride after dusk. And don't carry passengers
or packages that interfere with your vision or control. |
Bicycles are a
great source of fun and exercise.
But, bicycling can be dangerous. Be a smart and alert
cyclist.
|
| New
York State Bicycle Laws: |
|
• |
Adults and children are
bicycling in increasing numbers throughout the state,
for transportation and recreation. To be safe as possible,
bicyclists should be familiar with the traffic laws that
apply to the in NYS. |
| • |
Bicyclists must obey
all traffic lights and signals, and must signal for turns,
whether riding on a roadway, a bike lane, or bike path. |
| • |
Bicyclists have the legal
right to share the road on most public highways, with
the exception of interstate highways and expressways.
(Localities often prohibit bicycling on sidewalks) |
| • |
NYS law requires that
bicyclists drive with traffic. BICYCLING AGAINST TRAFFIC
IS A LEADING CAUSE OF BICYCLE ACCIDENTS! |
| • |
In NYS all bicyclists
age one through 13 are required to wear an approved bicycle
helmet, when they operators or passengers on bicycles. |
• |
Children under one year
old are prohibited from being transported on a bicycle. |
|
|
SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES POSE THE
GREATEST DANGER TO BICYCLISTS.
-
HELEMTS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THIS RISK.
